Shivram Dattatreya Phadnis is from a rare species of cartoonists who have not done political cartooning, "The Visual Experience offered by society is rich and universal and I enjoy it more than any thing else," he said in an interview.

S D Phadnis, born in 1925 in Belgaum district, took a Diploma in Commercial Art from Sir. J J School of Arts, Mumbai, in 1949. His hobby of drawing cartoons turned in to a career and his captionless coloured cartoons on magazines was new trend in Cover Designing. His cartoons have a stylized grace and gentle humour is presented with finesse. Phadnis is a rarity, some of his best cartoons don't have captions. That way he cuts language barriers.

His Chitrahas, an audio - visual programme with talk, demonstration and slide- show on the art of cartooning- was presented in many cities and also during overseas tours in the US and London, in l997. Some of his cartoons were exhibited and published in the international Salon of cartoons at Montreal (Canada) and Germany. Two TV programmes on the 'Art of Cartooning', were presented in the national telecast of UGC education programme in 1987.

He has published many books on cartooning and lives in Pune with author- wife Shakuntala.
